Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a legendary masterpiece. There's nothing that I can say that would be worthy enough to add to the gallons of ink that have already been put to paper on the subject.

However, this afternoon I decided to watch the new 4K restoration of the film (courtesy of Eureka) and I wasn't quite prepared for the way that it hit me. I had seen it only a few times before today, but this time, it felt fresh and new in a way that I can't quite articulate.

Every single frame is a work of art - each act perfectly building on to the next. As you're watching it, you are reminded of the ways in which so much of modern day cinema is indebted to this film.

Released in 1920, this quintessential gem of German Expressionism still terrifies. And one of the very first twist endings in the history of cinema remains just as shocking as ever.
