Shout Factory has released an obscure little gem from 1989, entitled Sonny Boy. If you've never seen this one before, just do yourself a favor and fix that immediately.
When a baby is kidnapped during a violent robbery, he is taken to the home of a mob boss and his transvestite "wife" (played by David Carradine, in one of the most audacious roles of his career). Over the years, the boy is systematically abused and trained to become a killer for his "father", who mercilessly obliterates anyone who gets in his way. When "Sonny Boy" finally escapes from his prison, he experiences an enormous amount of pain and sorrow, as well as the first pang of desire for a young woman who takes him under her wing.
This all leads to an explosive finale that is quite unexpected, but is incredibly memorable and leads to an ending that you'll never forget. Sonny Boy also features Brad Dourif in a gloriously over-the-top supporting role as the right hand man of Sonny Boy's father.
Shout Factory has delivered an excellent transfer of this film, and it should definitely garner a whole new generation of fans. Special features include an audio commentary and a theatrical trailer.
