"In a dark, dark wood there was a dark, dark house.
And in the dark, dark house there was a dark, dark room..."
As a child, this was one of my first "scary story" books. Many of you remember this. Seriously, though, how could you forget it?! It was written by Alvin Schwartz of "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" fame, and illustrated to perfection by Dirk Zimmer.
The stories are all memorable. Some of them still haunt us to this very day! Who didn't have nightmares over the imagery of "The Green Ribbon" or "The Teeth"? I remember reading this book time and time again as a kid. I would get extraordinarily giddy over the poem "In A Dark, Dark Room". I knew it by heart!
The other stories within the book are just as creepy, including "In the Graveyard", "The Night It Rained", "The Pirate", and "The Ghost of John". If you are a parent, or if you have a little brother or a little sister, do not hesitate to add this book to their library! It is an essential, life-changing work of art. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little. Or maybe I'm not...
