As we sit around waiting for the sequel to Michael Dougherty's cult classic, Trick 'r Treat, Epic Pictures has unleashed a beautiful four-disc set of the horror anthology film, Tales of Halloween - and it is definitely more than enough to tide us over until that aforementioned sequel rolls around.
Comprised of ten different horror shorts from a slew of acclaimed directors - including Lucky McKee, Neil Marshall, Darren Lynn Bousman, and several others - Tales of Halloween is, for the most part, a scary, unapologetically disgusting, and funny treat.
Highlights from the film include a tale of a murderous trick or treater named Sweet Tooth, who was denied candy as a child, and who appears every Halloween night to devour anyone who refuses to share their beloved treats with him. A segment featuring a group of vigilante trick or treaters who go on a bloody rampage to save a friend from a group of drunken sadists is sure to disturb, and then there is “Evil Dead” inspired segment featuring a curious little claymation alien, and a helpless victim that ends in possession and dismemberment. Throw in a bit with a killer pumpkin on a rampage, and you’re bound to have a good time. The other segments are not as memorable, but just as fun. Consistency in tone is not really a problem here, as the vignettes are all connected in some way, much like the narrative structure of the far superior Trick ‘r Treat.
There are also some clever cameos sprinkled throughout, featuring the likes of John Landis, Barry Bostwick, Adrienne Barbeau, Lin Shaye, Mick Garris, Stuart Gordon, and James Duval.
Epic Pictures has put together an epic four-disc set for this film. It includes the Blu-ray, the DVD, a disc of bonus features, and the CD soundtrack. It is absolutely loaded, and fans are guaranteed to be pleased by this release. A worthy addition to any horror fans collection!
